The food of Cyprus is truly unique! Of course, it’s heavily based on traditional Greek cuisine, but there’s also a strong Middle Eastern influence which brings a particularly special flavour to Cypriot dishes. There are many traditional meals eaten on the island, with recipes that have been perfected over the centuries. Here are 8 foods we think you really must try when you’re in Cyprus…

KOUPEPIA INNER

Koupepia

Koupepia is a traditional favourite among the villages of Cyprus and consists of fresh vine leaves with a delicious filling made of minced meat, rice, onions and tomatoes, flavoured with a blend of herbs. You must try this dish in Cyprus, but it’s also a good one to make when you get back home. Not only will it bring back those holiday memories, but it’s also a really good meal to cook in bulk and freeze.

 

Souvlakia and sheftalia

 If you’ve ever tried the Greek version of this dish, you’ll find the Cyprus version a little different. The dish includes tasty chunks of meat cooked on a skewer, presented along with fresh salad and served up in a large, thin pitta bread. This is often accompanied by sheftalia, a spicy parcel of grilled sausage meat.

 

Halloumi

 While some of these Cyprus delicacies you may not have heard of, you’ve probably heard of Halloumi, the famous cheese that’s only made in Cyprus. Using a blend of goat’s milk and sheep milk, this delicious and versatile cheese has a rubbery texture and a salty flavour. It’s beautiful grilled and delicious served cold too.

MAKARONIA TOU FOURNOU INNER

Makaronia tou fournou

This hearty dish may remind you of lasagne but also mac n’ cheese. It’s made with pasta tubes, bechamel sauce, a tomato infused pork mince meat, and of course lots of local halloumi cheese.

 

Koubes

Tasty koubes are croquettes with an outer casing made from bulgur wheat, filled with spicy minced meat and served with lemon wedges. They’re divine!  

 

Kleftiko

Kleftiko is a dish with an interesting back-story. Kleftiko means ‘stolen’ and in the past, people who stole meat would slow cook it underground to avoid the smoke giving away their crime. These days it is cooked in a traditional oven, still slowly, with oregano, bay leaves and red wine. It is served with potatoes or bulgur wheat.

LOUKOUMADES INNER

Loukoumades

For the most decadent dessert or a wonderful snack, try loukoumades. These deep-fried dough balls are soaked in honey and coated in nuts, seeds and cinnamon.
